20230618T1010 20230618T1200 America/Denver Workshop E - Part 2: Mine Fan Application to Underground Mine Ventilation

With improvements in battery and electric motor technology, the on-road vehicle industry is moving towards electrification of powertrains to reduce emissions and improve performance while meeting regulations. The off-road industry such as construction and mining are following this trend to take advantage of the reduced pollution and increased productivity.

The workshop is focused on introduction of various electrified powertrains and their components with a very detailed discussion on various safety aspects especially in the context of mining applications. Functionality of all the components in a battery electric powertrain is described along with possible failure modes and their mitigation. Several relevant safety standards are reviewed, and possible safety gaps are highlighted. Finally, a holistic view of infrastructure and fire fighting to support this technology is discussed especially in the context of lithium ion battery fires caused by thermal runaway incidents.

Southwest Research Institute performs extensive design and testing services to explore failure modes and their mitigation. A video simulating a battery fire during a crush event is shared to illustrate facilities needed to develop and continuously improve this technology.
